"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28
Many have taken the Bible out of context. They claim to have some sort of secret way of understanding it or that the Bible only means certain things that only certain people can understand. But the Bible, itself, says "Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." 2 Peter 1:20-21. The Bible is not meant to be read in a code like manner. It is written plainly and easily so that even a child can grasp the profoundness of these words and receive salvation for themselves. "But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 19:14
Some have even referenced Romans 8:28 incorrectly. Their motives are oftentimes pure, but we have to see this verse in light of our own walk with God. For this verse was written to us. God is good, this is true, but God also works good out for us of the faith. We can KNOW that all things that happen in this life, no matter how small or giant they may seem, will work together for good "to them that love God". True love is never selfish. When we say we love God, it must mean that we are willing to give up everything if we must.
We cannot say we love God and continue to live the lifestyle we are so accustomed to. We cannot say we love God and not want to serve and love others. We cannot say we love Him and at the first sign of trials turn our back on Him. We cannot say we love Him and not continue in joy in His work. In the end, God will be glorified, of course, but if we do not have joy bringing Him glory, then we are not truly glorifying Him.
Maybe there is something in your life that has taken you by surprise. We can have great solace knowing that, if we love God, all things will work together for good to us. Think on this verse, for it will help you during the hardest of times. R.A. Torrey once said "Romans 8:28 is a soft pillow for a tired heart." Find your rest in these words.
