"Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;" Deuteronomy 7:9
I grew up with the strong belief that promises should never be broken. "If you can't keep a promise, don't make a promise." was my motto. It might have been because I had so many promises broken in my life that I swore I would never do that to others. As far as I know, I have kept all the promises I said I was going to make. But I am still only human, and my memory may not always serve me right, but there is one who makes promises and has kept every single one of them since the beginning of time; to THIS DAY. In fact He, too, doesn't like it when promises are not kept.
Ecclesiastes 5:4-6 says, "When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay. Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at they voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?" It's a foolish thing to make a promise and not keep it. God, here, even references it as sin! How serious a promise must be if not keeping it causes separation, not only from the one you broke the promise to, but from you and God as well. But even if we are not faithful to keep our word, God is faithful. He keeps His covenants. He has kept every promise and He promises the believers as well! "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." John 10:10 "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." John 14:27 "And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world." 1 John 2:2 are just to name a few.
Not only are His promises faithful, but this verse says His MERCY is faithful to a thousand generations (this "thousand generation" mark is stating that His mercy continues forever, not just for a thousand generations). How amazing His mercy's are. How delightful it is to wake up and have a fresh pouring of mercy on us when we have Christ. How amazing it is to be able to lay my head down at night knowing that God has showed His mercy towards me even though I do not deserve it. "But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)" Ephesians 2:4-5
